Climbing Arborist Spotlight - Gabby Kleuver

Around the world, climbing arborists promote professional arboriculture and climbing safety through their involvement in tree climbing championships. The ISA Climbing Arborist Spotlight gives tree climbers a chance to share their stories, recognize their achievements, and provide insights into the industry. ISA is excited to launch this new spotlight as it is the 50th anniversary of the International Tree Climbing Championship (ITCC).

Meet Gabrielle (Gabby) Kleuver, an arborist from the Netherlands and member of the KPB ISA Dutch Chapter.  Kleuver began working in the industry in 1999 and recalls the challenges she faced at that time.

“The men I worked with had a bet around how long I would be working in the industry,” Kleuver said. “They thought I would stay for six months before quitting.”

Despite facing an initial hurdle, she persevered and continued building her career in the industry. Her advice to those experiencing similar obstacles is to continue to challenge yourself and believe that you can do it.

Although the number of women in the industry has increased, women still face many challenges, including  those who compete in tree climbing championships. For those new to the industry, Kleuver recommends focusing on your own progress rather than comparing yourself  to those around you.

“Don’t feel overwhelmed by all the experienced climbers,” Kleuver. “Just do things at your own pace. If it takes a couple more years to be at the level you want to be, so be it. Don’t rush.”.

Kleuver’s journey in competitive climbing began in 2000, when she became the first woman to compete in the Dutch Tree Climbing Championship. The following year, she was invited to compete in the International Tree Climbing Championship in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S.

Kleuver made history as one of seven women to compete in the competition for the first time. Twenty-five years later, these women’s groundbreaking participation continues to inspire the next generation of tree climbers.
